| SCAD prepares for 25th anniversary celebration By Angela Hendrix In only a quarter of a century, the Savannah College of Art and Design has grown from its humble beginnings as a one-building college serving 71 students to being heralded as the largest art and design college in the United States. Nearly 6,000 students from all 50 states and more than 80 countries study the visual and performing arts, design, the building arts and the history of art and architecture in more than 50 buildings. As the theme of this years celebration, Making Our Mark, reflects SCAD definitely made its mark. According to Danny Filson, who serves on the 25th anniversary committee, students, alumni, faculty, staff and the community will have opportunities throughout the year to be a part of the celebration. The college will host a series of exhibitions, lectures, concerts, theater performances, the annual Founders Day celebration, scholarship gala, fashion show and the Savannah Film Festival during the academic year. Each of these events will have a special emphasis on the 25th anniversary of the Savannah College of Art and Design, said Filson. The year begins with the opening of the exhibition Making Our Mark Aug. 29 at Red Gallery, 201 E. Broughton St. The commemorative exhibition, continuing through Oct. 13, features 25 artists who were commissioned to illustrate their experiences at SCAD, the impact the college has had on their lives and the lives of others, as well as their memories of SCAD. On Oct. 10, the college will host its annual Founders Day celebration. Each year the Founders Day awards program offers an opportunity to recognize outstanding staff, faculty and alumni, as well as the colleges founders. In addition, alumni are invited back to Savannah for the fall alumni weekend that coincides with Founders Day. The annual Savannah Film Festival, formerly the Savannah Film and Video Festival, Oct. 25 - Nov. 1, showcases the talents of the latest and the greatest filmmakers and offers a chance for movie buffs to experience the art of film. From feature-length films to two-minute shorts, the SCAD-hosted festival runs the gamut of cinematic creativity. This years festival will feature a special award in honor of SCADs 25th anniversary. The college invites students, alumni and faculty and staff to submit work for Faces of SCAD, a juried exhibition celebrating the 25th anniversary and the individuality of SCAD students, alumni, faculty and staff. All work will be executed on 10-by-10-inch canvases that are exclusively available from the colleges exhibitions department. The work will be exhibited during the winter quarter at several of SCADs on-campus galleries. For more information, call 525-6992. In addition to debuting the special 25th anniversary logo in the Sept. 12 issue, The Campus Chronicle will contain a feature each week titled Reflections. Reflections will spotlight photos from the past 25 years, as well as essays by staff, faculty, students, alumni and community members. If you would like to submit a special photo or essay, e-mail beth@scad.edu. These items might also be used for the commemorative book being planned by Design Press. For information on any of these events, call 525-5225. A complete schedule of events celebrating the colleges 25th anniversary will be available in September. Hendrix is the SCAD director of public information. |
