Parents Association offers new benefits

By Suzanne Savage

As the SCAD Parents Association begins its third year, new benefits are offered to Parents Association members. The Parents Association was formed during the 2001-2002 academic year as a way to keep parents of SCAD students informed about campus life and upcoming events at the college. Since its formation, the number of members has grown to 660 members.

“Parents are excited about their children’s SCAD experience and their exciting future,” said Barry M. Buxton, Ph.D., vice president for institutional advancement. “But sending a child off to college brings mixed emotions of pride and joy, along with that twinge of sadness at the thought of losing touch on a day-to-day basis. With this in mind, the college formed the Parents Association which enables parents, sometimes located far away from Savannah, to stay in touch, informed and involved with college activities and academic programs.”

Parents may join the Parents Association by paying membership dues of $50 for one academic year or $125 for a lifetime membership. A few of the benefits for members of the Parents Association are:

• Parents Association “Welcome Kit,” which includes a Parents Association membership card, auto decal and mouse pad, important campus phone number magnet and other “proud parent” items.

• Special discounts, using the Parents Association membership card, at SCAD Travel, the Gryphon Tea Room and other SCAD auxiliary services.
• Monthly e-mail updates with timely information about campus life, academic deadlines and upcoming events.

• Regular mailings including the alumni magazine, notices about media and performing arts productions, special events, and festivals.

• Fifty percent off a one-year subscription to The Campus Chronicle.

This year, Parents Association members are offered two new exciting benefits.

• Bakery items are available for deliver on all occasions, not just birthdays. Chooses to surprise your student at special times with cakes, brownies or cookies.

• Proud parent merchandise, including T-shirts, sweatshirts and baseball caps, available only through the Parents Association.

Staying in touch, informed and involved, parents are able to play an important role in their children’s educational experience. Parent Pam Hulse said, “I really enjoyed receiving the informational DVD “It’s Alive” that was mailed to Parents Association members.”
