Tennis and women’s golf teams earn academic honors

By Michael MacEachern

The Savannah College of Art and Design men’s and women’s tennis teams along with the women’s golf team have recently honored for their work in the classroom.

The men’s and women’s tennis teams have both been named All-Academic Teams by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The ITA also honored SCAD’s Rolando White and Natalie Garber as Scholar-Athletes.

The Bees were one of 13 NCAA Division III institutions to have both their men’s and women’s teams recognized as All-Academic Teams. To be eligible for the All-Academic Team, each team must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale).

The women’s team compiled a 3.58 grade point average as they went 8-6 this past season and finished 12th in the Atlantic South Regional rankings. The men’s team had a 3.30 grade point average as they went 14-2 and finished ranked eighth in the regional rankings.

To be eligible for Scholar-Athlete status, the player must be a varsity letter winner and have at least a 3.50 or better grade point average (on a 4.00 scale).

White, a junior from Puebla, Mexico, compiled a 12-6 record in singles last spring and has a 3.83 cumulative grade point average as a photography major. Garber, a sophomore from Anchorage, Alaska, went 6-2 in singles for the Bees this past season while compiling a 3.92 cumulative grade point average as an illustration major.

Women’s golfer Amber Weller has been named to the 2002-03 NCAA Division III All-American Scholar Team selected by the National Golf Coaches Association.

To be selected to the team, the student-athlete must have maintained a 3.50 cumulative grade point average and competed in 66 percent of the college’s regularly-schedule competitive rounds during the year. Weller was one of 44 golfers named to the NCAA Division III team.

Weller, a junior from Exeter, R.I., played in seven tournaments for the 22nd-ranked Bees this season and averaged 85.4 strokes per round. Golfstat ranks her sixth in the district and 34th nationally in NCAA Division III. She was named to the All-Tournament team at the Mount Holyoke Invitational last fall as she finished tied for second place. In that tournament, Weller established school records for low 18-hole (78) and 36-hole (159) scores. Weller has a 3.96 cumulative grade point average as an illustration major.
