By Hannah Pittard It is not by accident that alumnus Thomas Dang Vu (B.F.A. painting, 1994) returned to the Savannah College of Art and Design to play the Chinese zither at the Trustees Theater April 10. Nor is it without reason that he donated his honorarium for the concert to the May and Paul Poetter Scholarship Fund. The purpose of the concert was two-fold: Dang Vu wished not only to share his music with his alma mater, but also to honor May Poetter and the late Paul Poetter, both of whom were integral to the founding and growth of the college. Without Mrs. Poetters support, I would have never made it through school, said Dang Vu, who emigrated from Vietnam in 1986. Not only was I trying to find my place as a young adult, but I was also trying to find my role as a new American. During my years at SCAD, Mrs. Poetter helped put the pieces together as my mentor, my confidant and, most importantly, my friend. With infinite thanks and appreciation, I wish to dedicate this performance to Mrs. Poetter. more---> |
