The Savannah College of Art and Design dropped three of its final four games this season April 12-13. The Bees won the first game of a doubleheader at Ferrum College 6-0 as sophomore pitcher Sarah Areheart hurled her first collegiate no-hitter April 12 before being edged 5-4 in the second game. The Bees returned to Savannah April 13 and was defeated by No. 1-ranked Emory University 3-0 and 5-0 at the Paulson Softball Complex.

The Bees finished the 2003 season at 12-18.

Areheart (10-8) faced three batters over the minimum to pitch the college’s first no-hitter since Katie Davis’ game against Claflin University in a 10-2 victory on Feb. 28, 2001. Areheart struck out five and walked four.

The Bees got all the offense they would need in the first inning as SCAD jumped on Ferrum starter Sonya Francis for four runs. Neelum Tiwari, who went 2-for-4, drove in the first run on a single and Kendyl Scholz added a bases-clearing triple to give SCAD a 4-0 lead.

The Panthers responded by clawing out five runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth against SCAD starter Kelley McKnight (2-8) to break open the game.

SCAD rallied in the seventh for two runs on a Donofrio triple to get within a run at 5-4, but left the tying run at third base as Porter got Areheart to strike out looking to end the game.

Emory took a 1-0 lead on Mary Nichols’ leadoff homer off Areheart (10-9) in the second inning. The Eagles added another run on Melissa Roberts’ groundout that scored Tamara Boggs, who reached on a triple down the right field line.

Emory added an insurance run in the fourth on a Elizabeth Hampson’s double that scored Roberts who led off the inning with a double. Emory starter Nicole Kovski (13-2) no-hit the Bees until Tiwari led off the fifth with a single to center field. SCAD’s other hit came on a leadoff single by Angela Smith in the sixth.

In the second game, the Eagles took advantage of two SCAD miscues in the third inning to score four times (three of them unearned) off McKnight (2-9). Lauren Dix gave Emory a 2-0 lead on a two-run single to right field and moved to third when the ball went under Scholz’ glove. Dix scored on a bunt single by Allison Bouknight before Emory scored its final round on Roberts’ single.

Emory starter Christine O’Brien improved to 15-1 as she scattered seven hits. Senior outfielder Larissa Stec finished her career for the Bees as she went 3-for-4 against O’Brien. The game was also the final one for infielder Tonya Brock, who went 1-for-2 in the nightcap.
