Shirrel Rhoades donates rare comics and fashion photos By Hannah Pittard With his second and third donations to the Savannah College of Art and Design in the works (and a fourth one already on his mind), Shirrel Rhoades has proven himself a true benefactor to the college. Rather than allowing his formidable generosity to end with the donation of a substantial photography collection to the college in December 2001 including work by Ansel Adams, Annie Liebovitz and Richard Avedon Rhoades has initiated two more contributions of fashion photographs and comic books. At a certain point, after youve covered every wall of your home that you can cover and when you have storage units filled with photographs, you start to approach the miser category, and that doesnt seem right, said Rhoades. This is art and its made to be seen, and it seems like it needs to be in a venue where people can see it. Though the fashion photographs are certainly generating a buzz of their own, it is the comic book collection the application of which spans numerous departments that is, at least momentarily, eliciting the most enthusiastic response. When [Rhoades] realized we had a large sequential art department, he knew that this would be the right place for his comics to be displayed, said Jeffrey Bilder-back, director of corporate relations for the institutional advancement department. Rhoades initial decision to donate to the college was influenced by several factors, not the least of which is that his son Kevin graduated from SCAD with a B.F.A. in video/film in 1992. Ive always loved Savannah, said Rhoades. I was delighted when my son went to school there, and donating to SCAD gives me an excuse to visit. Ive been involved with other schools, but SCAD seemed an appropriate home for this kind of material. more---> |
