By Michael MacEachern The Savannah College of Art and Design womens soccer team had four players score a goal each as the Bees shut out Huntingdon College 4-0 Oct. 6 at the Chatham County Soccer Complex. The Bees improved to 7-4. The Hawks fell to 3-9-1. SCAD returns to action Oct. 13 at 1 p.m. when they host Elmhurst College in its final home match of the season. Prior to the match, a tailgate party will be held. The cookout will begin at noon in the parking lot of the Chatham County Soccer Complex, located on Sallie Mood Drive. All fans will receive a hot dog, chips, and soda in a SCAD cup. SCAD opened the scoring on a Lauren Ford goal at the 4:41 mark off an assist from Kendra Carey. It was Fords second goal of the season. Larissa Stecs 10th goal of the season gave SCAD a 2-0 lead almost eight minutes later. Stecs shot hit the post and bounced in the net. Lindsay Merkts goal with just under 13 minutes left in the first half gave the Bees a 3-0 cushion. Krystal Lewis assisted Merkts first goal of the season. Sarah Hanks scored SCADs final goal at the 52:06 mark. It was Hanks first goal of the season. SCAD goalkeeper Emily Bohart stopped the one shot she faced and registered her third consecutive shutout and fourth of the season. The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire scored three first-half goals including two from Jullia Powell as they defeated the Bees Oct. 4 at the Chatham County Soccer Complex. The Blugolds, who are ranked No. 25 in the latest NSCAA/adidas NCAA Division III national rankings, have won 10 of their last 11 matches and improved to 10-2-1 this season. SCAD saw its four-match win streak snapped. Powell, who leds UWEC with 11 goals this season, got the Blugolds out to 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal at the 9:13 mark. Powell added another goal 10 minutes later on a penalty kick. UWEC got its final goal of the half on Megan Oswells third goal of the season off an assist from Marcia Foltz with just over six minutes remaining. The Bees lone goal came four minutes later on Carla Andrianos first goal of the season off an assist from Lindy Krakowiak. Volleyball captures Guilford College Invitational for fifth time The volleyball team won the Guilford College Invitational title Oct. 5 for the second consecutive year and for the fifth time in the seven-year history of the tournament. The Bees defeated Ferrum College 30-15, 30-18, and 30-16 and Bridgewater College 30-25, 31-29 and 30-25 on the final day of the tournament. SCAD, Bridgewater and Greensboro College each finished the tournament with identical 3-1 records, but the Bees were named champions as they won the most games (11) in the tournament. SCAD improved to 15-7 as they won its second consecutive tournament in as many weeks. The Bees return home Oct. 11-12 as they host Guilford and Southern Virginia University in the SCAD Invitational Tournament at Savannah Country Day School. The Bees host Guilford at 3 p.m. Oct. 11 followed by a 5:30 p.m. match against Southern Virginia. SCAD will host Southern Virginia at 10 a.m. Oct. 12 and Guilford at 3 p.m. Against Ferrum, Jessica Clark led the Bees with 10 kills while Lindsey Butterworth and All-Tournament performer Kim Edwards each added nine digs. Moody added six assists and All-Tournament performer Ally Schramer contributed 24 assists. Edwards led SCAD with 11 kills and three aces against Bridgewater. Emily Avery paced the Bees with 14 digs and Clark added five blocks. Schramer led SCAD with 24 assists. The volleyball team split two matches Oct. 4.The Bees saw their winning streak snapped at eight matches as they dropped a five-set match to Greensboro College by scores of 30-17, 30-25, 25-30, 27-30, and 15-8. SCAD started a new winning streak when they defeated Averett University in straight sets - 30-12, 30-23, and 30-20. Edwards led the Bees with 19 kills and four service aces in the Greensboro match. Schramer contributed 40 assists while Butterworth added 14 digs. Avery added six blocks. Clark led the Bees with 12 kills and four blocks while Edwards added eight digs against Averett. Schramer led the setters with 31 assists while Moody added six aces. Mens golf finishes ninth at Greensboro Invitational The mens golf team struggled during its final round of the 2002 Greensboro College Invitational Tournament and finished 10th out of 17 teams. The Bees, who entered the day tied for second place just two shots behind the leader at 290, shot a final round 325 and finished the two-day tournament with a score of 615. The University of North Carolina "B" team won the 36-hole event with a score of 572 on the par-71, 7,012-yard layout at the Salem Glen Country Club in Clemmons, N.C. The Bees had two players finish in the top 20. Dalton Harpe, who shot an even-par round 71 in the opening round, finished tied for ninth after closing with a 75 for a 146 total. Jon Orchin, who also shot even-par in the first round, shot a 79 in the final round and finished tied for 19th place at 150. Grant McMahan and Brad Bonner finished tied for 54th place with scores of 160 while Trey Daughtridge finished tied for 70th at 164. Drew Mersinger, who was playing as an individual for SCAD, finished in 85th place at 176. The Bees close out their fall season Oct. 26-27 at the Emory University Fall Invitational in Stone Mountain. Womens cross country finishes seventh at championships The womens cross country team finished seventh out of 13 teams at the 38th annual Georgia Collegiate Championships held Oct. 5 in Panthersville. The women, which finished with 172 points, were led by Kendra Bairds time of 20:14 over the 5K course. Bairds 15th-place finish was one place shy of being named to the all-state team. Beth OBrien was the other top-20 finisher for the Bees with a time of 20:20 to finish in 17th place. Megan McSweeney was next for SCAD with a time of 22:10 in 41st place followed by Erica Gajewski (22:28, 48th), Sara Keel (23:11, 51st), Lee Harlowe (24:19, 57th) and Elizabeth Adams (25:45, 60th). The mens team, which did not record a score as a team in the 8K race, was led by Garrett Johnsons 60th-place finish of 29:59. Dave Adams finished in 97th place (32:09), followed by Logan Petree (34:56, 114th), and Dan Atherton (37:56, 132nd). Both teams return to action at the USCS Invitational in Spartanburg, S.C., Oct. 12 Mens soccer suffers third consecutive defeat Paced by a goal and an assist by Michael M. Smith, Greensboro College defeated the Savannah College of Art and Design 2-0 Oct. 6 at Pride Field in Greensboro, N.C. Greensboro improved to 7-3, while the Bees suffered their third consecutive 2-0 loss and fell to 2-8-1 this season. SCAD returns to action with a 3:30 p.m. match at Washington and Lee University Oct. 12. The Pride scored the matchs first goal in the 20th minute. Michael C. Smith took a free kick from 30 yards that was saved and deflected by SCAD goalkeeper Sam Wolfgram. Michael M. Smith booted in the rebound for the score. Wolfgram had eight saves for the Bees. In the matchs 37th minute, Charlie Blackwell scored for The Pride. Blackwell blasted a left-footed shot from 20 yards for the tally. Michael M. Smith and Davis Boyle assisted on the play. Roanoke College scored its ninth consecutive victory with a 2-0 win over SCAD Oct. 4. The Maroons are ranked No. 13 in the latest NSCAA/adidas NCAA Division III rankings. Womens tennis competes at regionals The womens tennis team competed at the 2002 Omni Hotels NCAA Division III South Atlantic Regional Tournament Oct. 4-5 hosted by the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn. Jelena Lustica and Teressina Araiza from SCAD each won their first-round singles match before losing in the second round. Victoria Mier, Marisol Angel and Rita Miller each lost their first-round singles matches, but each won a match in the consolation round. Rowing opens season at Head of the Ohio Regatta The rowing teams opened the 2002 season at the Head of the Ohio Regatta Oct. 5 in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Bees earned the first medal of the season when they finished second out of 15 teams in the mens lightweight race. Members of the team included Russell Yost (coxswain), Christian Ward (4 seat), Chris Bankoff (3 seat), Jeff Meyer (2 seat) and Greg Cook (bow). SCAD finished seventh out of nine teams in the mens heavyweight race while the Bees finished seventh out of 10 boats in the womens open race. Both teams return to action Oct. 13 when they participate in the Occoquan Chase in Fairfax, Va. Basketball teams tip off practice with Midnight Madness Both the mens and womens basketball teams will tip off its 2002 preseason with Midnight Madness. Activities get underway at 11:30 p.m. Oct. 14 at the Savannah Civic Center. There will be a grand prize for the residence hall with the most attendees and free pizza will be given to all students.
