Maureen Burke, dean of academic initiatives, and Earle W. Newton, Ph.D., admire some of the work on display during the centers dedication ceremony at Kiah Hall May 29. Newton, a retired museum director, publisher and educator, donated a collection of 17th-19th century English and American paintings and prints to the college in 2001. The collection includes work by William Hogarth, Gilbert Stuart, Thomas Gainsborough and Sir Joshua Reynolds. Also included in the donation was an early Georgian townhouse in Horncastle, England, as well as rare books, maps and other historical artifacts. Newton donated the collection as an academic resource for students, faculty, scholars and the community, to stimulate and support interdisciplinary studies about the important historical, cultural and visual ties between the United States and Great Britain. The current exhibition, "Picturing the Past: A Preview of the Earle W. Newton Collection," will be open until June 30 and includes work by Gilbert Stuart, George Romney and William Hogarth. The Newton Center is open Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. |
