| Web offers opportunities for artists By Ally Jackson Nothing great was ever achieved by not taking a risk. I think there is a commercial on TV for online investments that has a similar spin. In saying that, there are ways to get you out there and get exposure, without taking the said risk. It is called the Internet. To get exposure, I suggest artists develop their own Web page. Those who are not Web literate should find a graphic design student and barter, trade or buy his or her services. An Internet Service Provider, or an ISP, will usually charge you somewhere in the ballpark of $18 per month for the service. This risk is minimal compared to the cost of a cell phone or cable TV. Next, hunt down companies that want to give you the exposure. The Savannah College of Art and Design has countless online exhibitions and galleries of student work from every major. It is one of the places recruiters go looking for hot, emerging talents. Artoutthere.com is a company with which I have had personal success. Sellyourart.net and artregistryoftampa.com are two more that seem promising. For free-lance opportunities, try elance.com. Elance.com has a unique arrangement: Candidates bid on a job and pay a fee to enter into the bid category. For example, a person would pay $30 per month to be in the $100 job bids, $50 to bid on jobs paying $300. Be wary of any company that wants to charge substantial fees for any posting service, especially if they are taking a percentage of any sales or commissions. |
