By Michael MacEachern This summer marks the first time that the Savannah College of Art and Design athletics department is sponsoring a summer camp program. The summer program offers camps in nine different sports to children from age 6 to 18. "Its common practice for colleges to run summer camp programs," said athletics director Jud Damon. "It has been a priority of mine since my arrival at SCAD to get them established. I feel it is important, as the department expands, that summer camps are an integral part of that expansion." Summer camps are seen as beneficial in many ways, according to Damon. "For one, it is great community relations for the college and the athletics department," he said. "Our aim is to provide quality, affordable camps with outstanding instruction by our coaching staff." The summer camps are led by SCADs head coaches. The camps introduce participants to their chosen sport and focus on fundamentals. Camps are offered in baseball, basketball, cheerleading, golf, rowing, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. Each camper also receives a camp T-shirt. The camp program got underway June 3 with three volleyball camps that were filled to capacity at St. Pauls Activity Center. The camps will run through late July.
