
The fashion department has been invited to participate in the fourth annual international Gen Art design competition. This prestigious design competition sponsored by the Gen Art organization promotes new fashion design talent and hosts a runway presentation for selected finalists to showcase their work to high profile fashion industry judges in New York City this month.
The Savannah College of Art and Design is the recipient of an Eastman Product Grant valued at $2,000 from Eastman Kodak Company for the 2001 academic year. The Eastman Product Grant Program has extended more than $1.5 million in grants since its establishment in 1991. Grants take the form of Kodak motion picture camera film. They are extended directly to the educational institution, rather than to individual students, in recognition of overall program quality. Use of the film is determined at the sole discretion of the schools faculty and administration.
Swarming You took the title of intramural softball champions From Team McDermid May 26 at Grayson Stadium with a final score of 12-8. Swarming You beat Team Kavanaugh and Team McDermid beat Hamilton Hall to advance to the final round.
Foundation studies professor Avantika Bawa was chosen to do a site-specific piece for a juried three-person show, "Rebirth of Space," at the Sixty-Four Steps Contemporary Art Gallery in Toronto, Canada.
Art history professor Margy Betz was unanimously selected to receive the GSUC-CUNY Alumni Achievement Award for 2002, and traveled to New York City in May to accept the accolades.
Illustration students Leslie Browning, Sarah Cunningham, Chad Fox, Wyatt Graff, Libby Gross, Daniel Hathorn, Ahren Hertel, Miho Nishijima, Cliff Tomczyk and John Wright had entries accepted into The Society of Illustrators West competition.
Fibers student Raquel Cochez had work accepted for the 10th Annual College Juried Art Exhibition, April 5-28, at The Art Place, Marietta, Ga. Cochez is also exhibiting work in "Women in History" at The Sentient Bean.
Illustration department chair Mohamed Danawi and media and performing arts professor and department chair Jeffrey DeVincent have been selected for inclusion in the 2002 edition of "Whos Who Among Americas Teachers." The publication will honor a select 5 percent of the nations teachers who have made a significant contribution to the academic community.
Foundation studies professor Sherry Deems served as juror for the Texas Art Education Visual Art Scholastic Event in Houston, Texas, April 12-13.
Computer art professor Garman Herigstad worked on visual effects for the Dreamworks feature film, "The Time Machine." He is credited in the film under "Digital Domain," for creating the digital global cloud weather patterns for the earth to moon time-lapse sequence.
Fashion senior Venita James modeled a selection of outfits for designer Vivienne Westwood during the stores spring collection retail reception in SoHo, New York, N.Y.
Illustration professor Richard Krepel had an illustration accepted into Communication Arts Illustration Annual 2002, "Spectrum," a national publication that features fantasy art, had two entries accepted into American Illustration under the "Chosen" category, and one piece selected for the Society of Illustrators traveling exhibit.
Architecture students Raphaelle Marmier and Shalom Choong are the recipients of the 2002 Richard F. Abbitt Scholarship. These two $500 scholarships are awarded to architecture students, based on a portfolio presentation, application statement and financial need. Each recipient must be a full-time student pursuing the bachelor of fine arts/master of architecture degree. This scholarship is applied toward tuition and fees for any three quarters pf the academic year based on full-time status and a quarterly grade point average of at least 3.0.
Foundation studies professor John M. Mitchells work was included in the Georgia Triennial 2002-2003 exhibition. The exhibition, April 12-June 7 at the City Gallery East, Atlanta, featured 30 of Georgias most innovative contemporary artists. This exhibit will also tour the state: The Museum of Arts and Science in Macon (August 23-October 13, 2002); The Telfair Museum of Art, Savannah, (December 10, 2002-February 16, 2003); and the Albany Museum of Art, Albany (March 7-4, 2003).
Architecture graduate student Drura Parrish will have his paper titled "Shifting the Paradigm" presented at the 2002 ACSA International Conference in Cuba during the "Urban Design" sessions.
