Women’s soccer stomps Warner Southern

Senior Laura Vaughn scored a SCAD record four goals as the Savannah College of Art and Design thwarted Warner Southern College 8-0 in a Florida Sun Conference women’s soccer match Oct. 9 at the Chatham County Soccer Complex.

The Bees won back-to-back matches for the first time since they won their first two matches of the season and improved to 4-5-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the conference. The Royals remained winless in eight matches, including six in the Florida Sun. The Bees return to action at 1 p.m. Oct. 15 with an FSC match against Webber International University in Babson Park, Fla.

Vaughn, who scored twice in each half, set the school record for goals (four) and points (eight) in the match. The previous record held by several players was three goals and six points. Vaughn, who has played the past two seasons for the Bees, now ranks third on the all-time goals scored list with 19 and on the total points list with 46.

The Bees took a 3-0 lead midway through the first half as they scored three goals in a nine-minute span. Lindsay Lowder scored the first goal at the 17:03 mark before Vaughn, who has scored seven goals this season, scored the next two. Senior Lindy Krakowiak, who also added an assist, closed out the scoring in the first half with her second goal of the season at the 32:32 mark.

Haley Bryant also scored two goals for the Bees, who out-shot the Royals 22-9, in the second half, while Susan Dove assisted on two goals. Lucero Ruiz also registered an assist in the SCAD win.

Goalkeepers Lisa Gallant and Laura Hansen recorded six saves for the Bees’ second consecutive shutout. Stefanie Schmidt tallied six saves for the Royals.

Men’s soccer drops match to Webber

Kiren Jones’ goal was the difference as Webber International edged SCAD 2-1 in a Florida Sun men’s soccer match Oct. 10 at a wet Chatham County Soccer Complex.

The Warriors improved to 4-6-1 overall and 3-3-0 in the Florida Sun, while the Bees dropped their fifth consecutive match and suffered their fifth one-goal loss of the season, falling to 6-8-0 and 3-5-0. SCAD returns to action Oct. 15 with a 3 p.m. match against Webber International in Babson Park, Fla.

Jones’ deciding goal was scored off a direct kick from Patrick Slattery at the 65:47 mark of the match. SCAD, which out-shot Webber International 25-6, had tied the match at 1 on Matt Engele’s team-leading 11th goal of the season off an assist from Kyle Richardson at the 35:05 mark. Emil Wahlqvist scored the Warriors’ other goal off an assist from Eric Welch midway through the first half.

William Bass tallied 13 saves for Webber International, while SCAD’s Zach Walters registered two.

Carlos Romero scored with 8:59 remaining to give Warner Southern a 1-0 victory over the Bees in a Florida Sun match Oct. 9 at the Chatham County Soccer Complex.

Romero’s match-winning goal, which hit the far post and crossbar before coming down in the left corner of the goal, came at the 81:01 mark.

The Bees had wasted an opportunity to score earlier in the half when Warner Southern goalkeeper Luis Rincon stopped Engele’s penalty kick at the 57:37 mark.

Each team registered 15 shots with SCAD leading 11-7 in shots on goal. Rincon tallied 11 saves while Walters had six for the Bees.


White featured in Sports Illustrated

Cross country runner Hilary White is featured in the Oct. 11 issue of Sports Illustrated. White appears in the Faces in the Crowd section of the magazine, which honors the achievements of athletes.

A junior painting major from Gainesville, Fla., White broke the SCAD 5K record four different times this season. At the Eye Opener (the first meet of the season) Sept. 4, She broke the school mark with a time of 19:08. The college’s previous record was 19:09, which was set in 2000. She continued to break the record with times of 18:42 and 18:12 at the next two meets before she set a course record of 18:01 at The Citadel Invitational Sept. 25.

“It really is an honor to be considered,” said White. “I can’t get comfortable with where I am because there is much work left to do. I can’t take any credit for this recognition; I have to give all the credit to God. I use running to glorify God.”

White has twice been named the Florida Sun Conference Bi-Weekly Runner of the Week this season. She was also selected by the Savannah Sports Monthly as the Chick-fil-A Sportsman of the Month for September.

“Hilary is a hard worker,” said cross country head coach Gabi Hauck. “She has been a great addition to the team. She compliments the talent we have on the team and she is what we have needed to get to the next level.”


Women’s cross country wins second meet of season

The women’s cross country team finished in first place while the men finished in fifth Oct. 9 at the Mountain Top Classic hosted by Covenant College in Lookout Mountain.

The women’s team finished on top with 59 points. The men’s team finished with 124 points in the 13-team field, which was won by Carson-Newman College with 58.

White finished in second place overall in the women’s 5K race with a time of 19:00 while Christina Porter finished in sixth with a time of 20:56. Lauren Newey placed 15th with a time of 22:01 and was followed by Jill Evans in 16th place with a time of 22:12. Kendra Baird posted a time of 22:24, good for 20th place, followed by Erica Gajewski (22nd, 22:38), Lindsay Graham (25th, 22:58), Megan McSweeney (44th, 24:57), Melia Harrison (48th, 25:17) and Katie Irons (52nd, 25:35).

Garrett Johnson was the Bees’ top finisher in the men’s 8K race with a time of 28:50, good for fourth place. For the second time this season, Johnson was named the Florida Sun Conference’s Runner of the Week. Mark Durling came in 28th place with a time of 30:39 while Zachary Deaton finished in 32nd place with a time of 30:59. Eric Pedersen finished in 36th place with a time of 31:25, followed by Alan Guevara (37th, 31:38), Bren Isbell (38th, 31:39) and Taylor Green (48th, 32:52).

Both teams will have the weekend off before traveling to Miami, Fla., Oct. 22 at 5 p.m. for the St. Thomas Invitational.


Volleyball suffers first conference loss of the season

The volleyball team beat Webber International 30-20, 30-16 and 30-21 only to suffer its first conference loss of the season when Northwood University defeated the Bees 17-30, 30-20, 30-17, 14-30 and 15-12 Oct. 9 in Babson Park, Fla.

SCAD, which is ranked No. 1 in the latest NAIA Region XIV poll, improved to 12-5 overall and 7-1 in the conference. The Bees will be back in action Oct. 22 at 5 p.m. when they host Northwood in the first match of the SCAD Invitational to be held at Savannah High School.

Cristina Payne led the Bees with 16 kills, 14 digs and four aces in the win over Webber International. Lindsey Thorne tallied 12 digs and seven kills, while Emily Bumby added seven kills and three digs. Ally Schramer led the team with 23 assists and Bryn Tofte added 12. Lindsey Butterworth had nine digs and Dina Lamanna contributed five.

In the loss to Northwood, Payne had 22 kills, eight digs and five blocks, and Katy Richardson had 13 kills, nine digs and five blocks. Bumby registered 23 digs and eight kills, while Thorne added 22 digs and eight kills. Schramer had 32 assists and six digs, and Tofte contributed 21 assists and nine digs. Butterworth totaled 21 digs and Lamanna added 13, while Cameron Goldsmith had five blocks.

SCAD defeated Warner Southern 30-18, 31-29 and 30-16 Oct. 8 in Lake Wales, Fla.

Payne led the Bees with 12 kills, five digs and eight blocks, and Richardson contributed nine kills and two aces. Bumby had 11 kills and a .529 hitting percentage, while Thorne had nine kills, 10 digs and a .529 hitting percentage. Goldsmith led the Bees defensively with 11 blocks and Lamanna added eight digs. Schramer had 23 assists and Tofte added 17 assists.


Rowing teams open 2004 season

The men’s and women’s rowing teams began the 2004 season by picking up three silver medals Oct. 9 at the Chattanooga Head Race in Chattanooga, Tenn.

The women’s double team of Melissa Forsberg and Stephanie Waugh finished second on the 5,000-meter course down the Tennessee River with a time of 18:04.54. The Oak Ridge Rowing Association team won the race with a time of 17:47.30.

The men’s novice four team finished second out of three teams with a time of 16:13.64. Members of the team included Eska Palmer (coxswain), Walker Carney (stroke), A.J. Willson (three seat), Greg Murphy (two seat) and Omar Richardson (bow). Clemson University won the race with a time of 15:31.01. The women’s novice team finished second out of four teams with a time of 17:49.25. Chris Ruhlen (coxswain), Kristina Dixon (stroke), Michelle Baranda (three seat), Bridgid Boyle (two seat) and Ashley Crooks (bow) made up the team for SCAD. The University of Tennessee took the top spot with a time of 17:49.25.

The men’s varsity four team placed fifth out of 13 teams with a time of 15:12.16. Members of the team included Russell Yost (coxswain), Darren Sumich (stroke), Clinton Leite (three seat), Brad Zale (two seat) and David Sharp (bow). Georgia Tech won the race with a time of 14:36.66.

SCAD returns to action Oct. 30 when they travel to Philadelphia for the Head of Schuylkill.


Tennis teams claim titles

The men’s and women’s tennis teams picked up two titles in the consolation finals Oct. 8 at the 2004 ITA NAIA Florida Region Championships being held at the Ambassador E. William Crotty Tennis Complex on the campus of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Javier Angel teamed up with Adrian White in the men’s doubles final to defeat SCAD teammates Brian Ahmes and Kirk Hamilton 8-3 for the title. The other consolation title belonged to the women’s doubles team of Melyssa Vazquez and Erica Cardenas, who defeated Rashmee Kumari and Sophi Alrikson of Webber International University 9-7.

Earlier in the day, Angel and White lost to Embry-Riddle’s team of Evan Specht and Tomo Yasuda in the second round of the men’s doubles main draw, losing 8-3. SCAD’s Chloe Lipp dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Liezl Samios-Uy of Embry-Riddle in the third round of the women’s single main draw. In the second round of the women’s consolation singles draw, Vazquez lost to Annie Deshamps of Northwood (Fla.) University 8-4.

The men’s and women’s teams won’t play again until Feb. 19, 2005, when they host Embry-Riddle at 4 p.m. at the Bacon Park Tennis Courts.
