Afifi Amphitheater showcases ‘Cyrano’
Savannah College of Art and Design presents the swashbuckling comedy “Cyrano,” adapted by Jo Roets, translated into English by Audrey Van Tuyckom from the play by Edmond Rostand. This “heroic comedy” set in 17th-century France is the story of Cyrano de Bergerac, a master swordsman and prolific poet with only one thing standing between him and the woman he loves: his very large nose.

Rostand’s classic has been distilled from the sweeping epic into an intimate comedy with three performers portraying multiple characters. “Cyrano” features swordfights, comedy, love and songs and is directed by M.F.A. candidate Troy Heard. Media and performing arts undergraduate student Becky White plays Cyrano, Zack Alig is Christian, and Kate Carson-Groner plays Roxanne.

Performances will be held Aug. 13-15 at the Afifi Amphitheater, 324 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. The play starts at 7 p.m. and admission is free. For more information, call 525-6931.

MIT conference aims for new architectural praxis
Savannah College of Art and Design students, faculty and alumni are invited to a conference titled “Non Standard Praxis: Emergent Principles of Architectural Praxis with/in Digital Technologies” at the Stata Centre at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sept. 24-26.

The conference looks to establish the tenets of a radically revised architectural praxis mandated by digital technologies.

The conference continues from the provocative exhibition at the Centre Pompidou, “Non Standard Architecture,” curated by Frederic Migayrou, which proclaims the full emergence of a legitimate digital praxis in architecture. Most crucially, the conference will involve three ‘waves’ of digital absorption in architecture that progressively extend the research work of digital pioneers Bill Mitchell, John Frazer and Bernard Cache and apply it to new modes of working practice.
