At the monthly breakfast of the Savannah Metropolitan Area Executive Law Enforcement Officers Association July 22, Director of College Security Gene Friedman was elected vice chairman of the group for 2005. In 2006, he will succeed to the chairman’s position.

“I was extremely flattered and honored by this recognition from fellow professionals,” Friedman said. “This honor is heightened by the fact that I am the only non-sworn member of the group. All the others are chiefs of local police departments, the county sheriff, commanders from state agencies (GBI, Medical Examiner, Georgia State Patrol, Corrections) and executive officers from the Secret Service, U.S. Marshal’s Office, U.S. Attorney’s Office, Coast Guard Investigative Service and the FBI.”

Film and television professor Michael Chaney’s 10-minute film “Luke” will be screening at the 58th Annual Edinburgh International Film Festival Aug. 20 and Aug. 21 as part of the U.S. Shorts program.

Written, produced and financed by Chaney, “Luke” tells a contemporary variation of the biblical parable of the Good Samaritan as it recounts a day in the life of a soldier during wartime. The crew was made up entirely of SCAD students and faculty. The cast was comprised mostly of non-actors from Savannah, including faculty and staff from the college.

The world premiere was at the 33rd International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2004. “Luke” also was accepted into the 10th Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films. According to Chaney, this festival is “arguably the most prestigious short film festival in the United States. This is an Academy Award-qualifying festival and should bring great attention to the college, the department of film and television and to all who put so much effort into its production.”

Photography alumnus Colin Douglas Gray (B.F.A., 2004) placed first in Savannah magazine’s “Thru Your Lens” photo contest with his photograph “Dusk at the Refuge.” Senior photography student Adam Kuehl placed second with “Night Globe” and junior photography student Paul O’Reilly placed fourth with “Presumed Tourists.”

Photographers were asked to show “unusual sights in the Savannah area or familiar landmarks photographed in an unusual way.” The winners of the contest were announced in the July/August issue of the magazine.

Sekerova, a veteran of the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, recently returned to Slovakia, where she is training more than five hours a day and staying with her family.

Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue named Savannah College of Art and Design President Paula S. Wallace as education community representative to the state’s Film, Video, and Music Advisory Commission. The executive appointment was announced July 30.
